Mavs go off on winning note, sweep Sheridan

The Miles City Mavericks had a chance to do something that not every team can do for the 2006 season -- go out a winner.

The Mavericks, who had lost 17 straight games, dating back to July 4th, went out winners in a 6-1 and 9-4 sweep of the Sheridan Troopers at Denton Field on July 25th.

Nate Dunning tossed a three-hitter in the opener, allowing just a seventh-inning unearned run, while Brandon Sandau went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI. Ryan Harris had two hits and drove in three runs for the Mavericks (11-44), and Kurtis Miller also drove in a run.

In the nightcap, Miller struggled at times, but managed to take advantage of what was a long time coming for him -- offensive support.

Pat Regan highlighted a five-run first inning with an inside-the-park home run, and drove in three runs for Miles City. Harris capped off a 5-for-8 day with three hits and three RBI, while Sandau (three runs) and Chris Bogner added a hit and a RBI each. The Mavs had an 8-0 lead after two innings and Miller cruised the rest of the way for the complete-game win.

Mavs sweep Sturgis, go 3-1 for weekend

The Miles City Mavericks had it all working on Sunday at Denton Field.

The Mavericks, who just snapped a 14-game losing streak the day before in a doubleheader split with Williston, made it a 3-for-4 weekend with a doubleheader sweep of Sturgis, 4-1 and 9-5.

Miles City (9-27 overall) had a solid pitching performance from Seth Crawford, who picked up his third win of the season in getting the complete-game win in the opener. Crawford (3-2) took a shutout into the 7th inning.

The Mavs erupted for three runs in the third and six runs in the fourth inning in game two, while Pat Regan and three relievers managed to bring home the win. Regan (2-1) picked up his first mound win since April 30 -- the last time Miles City swept a doubleheader.

Up next for the Mavericks -- the 26th Annual Bill Newhouse Blue Rock Distributing Pepsi-Cola Wood-Bat Baseball Tournament at Denton Field.

Mavs break 14-game slide in split with Keybirds

The Miles City Mavericks managed to get themselves off of the losing train they have been on over nearly a month on Saturday at Denton Field, thanks to a strong effort from Kurtis Miller and the ability for the offense to take advantage of someone else's mistakes for a change.

Miller scattered six hits and survived his only rough inning, while the Mavericks managed to take advantage of a four-error Willison meltdown in the 4th inning and get themselves a 5-2 win. The voctiry snapped a 14-game losing streak, which started after their last win on June 4.

Brandon Sandau (RBI) and Chris Bogner each collected two hits, and Jordan Bryant-Morris added a hit and a RBI to the offense, which had seven hits total.

The Mavericks (7-27) would drop the second game of the doubleheader, 7-0. The Mavs have lost 15 of 16 and are just 2-18 in their last 20 games.
